How to use the 4-20mA to Process Value Calculator
This universal scaling calculator allows you to convert process variables into analog signals, and vice versa. It supports 4–20 mA, 0–20 mA, 0–10 V, 2–10 V, and 3–15 psi signals.
The calculator works bi-directionally and updates instantly as you type. Follow these simple steps to perform your calculation:
- Step 1: Choose your Signal Type — Select the analog input or output signal your instrument uses from the dropdown menu (e.g., 4–20 mA for standard loops or 3–15 psi for pneumatic systems).
- Step 2: Enter the Instrument Range — Fill in the minimum value (LRV – Lower Range Value) and maximum value (URV – Upper Range Value) of your sensor or instrument (e.g., 0 to 6 bar, or -50 to 150 °C).
- Step 3: Enter your known value — You can now type in either input field:
- Type in the Signal field to instantly find the corresponding process value.
- Type in the Process Value field to instantly find the required signal output.
- Step 4: Check the Percentage — The live status box at the bottom will continuously display the exact measurement percentage (0–100%) of the scale.
⚠️ Built-in Sensor Error Detection (NAMUR NE43)
To mirror real-world industrial control systems (DCS/PLC), this calculator features automated error checking. If a value falls outside safe operational limits, the interface will turn red and display: “Value out of range / NAMUR-limit!”
- For 4–20 mA signals: Following the NAMUR NE43 standard, any value below 3.6 mA (indicating a wire break) or above 21.0 mA (indicating a short circuit) triggers a critical error state.
- Other signal types: Proportional safety limits are active across all other voltage, current, and pneumatic ranges to detect hardware failures.
